  • Inspiration leads Big Rock with 754.3-pound blue marlin

    Inspiration captain Casey Wagner, Morehead City, and angler Bruce Brown of Nags Head capped a remarkable first day of fishing in the 56th annual Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament when they took over first place Monday evening with a 754.3-pounder caught after a 4.5 hour fight.

    Brown reeled in the largest blue marlin caught during the Big Rock this century. But when he spoke to reporters, he downplayed his role during the catch and talked instead of the teamwork that made it possible. Read more »

    Eye Catcher, a Wrightsville Beach-based boat captained by Burrows Smith, Wilmington, hooked a 606.9-pound blue marlin just 11 minutes after the start of the 56th annual Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament and rookie angler Randy Kelley, Wrightsville Beach, reeled in the big catch in just 46 minutes.   • Bill Collector wins 17th annual KWLA tournament

    Bill Collector anglers Linda Rice, Morehead City, and Jill Wilson, Cedar Point, combined to release a blue marlin and a sailfish Saturday to defeat a record field of 81 boats and win the 17 annual Keli Wagner Lady Angler (KWLA) tournament.

    Rice reeled in and released her blue marlin at 9:31 a.m., but it was the sailfish that Wilson released 72 minutes later that gave Bill Collector the lead for good and a $8,606 share of the $17,212 purse. Read more »
