  • Marlin Gull wins $433,500, grabs Big Rock lead

    Marlin Gull captain Kenny Midgett, Wanchese, and angler, William McSpadden, Coinjock, joined forces Monday to land a 564.8-pound blue marlin and win an instant prize of $433,500 as they grabbed the first-day lead in the 58th annual Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament.

    Three blue marlins were landed Monday as the tournament celebrated its biggest start in years. A flurry of offshore billfish activity helped fill up the tournament leaderboard as 105-of-174 boats battled for $1,914,100 on opening day. Read more »

  • Prize money for 58th Big Rock reaches $1.91 million

    A last minute rush of registrations for the 58th annual Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament yielded additional competitors and increased the field to 174 boats late Sunday as the competition purse reached $1,914,100.

    To put this into perspective, Creator won $800,000 Saturday as the long-shot winner of the Belmont Stakes. A week from now, the winner of the 58th Big Rock could receive $1,096,425 if entered in all levels of the competition. Read more »

  • Ashley Lauren wins 19th annual KWLA tournament

    Clayton anglers Jackie Miller and Kim Annis each caught and released a blue marlin Saturday to help the Ashley Lauren top a record field of 125 boats and win the 19th annual Keli Wagner Lady Angler (KWLA) Blue Marlin Tournament.

    Miller reeled in and released her blue marlin at 11:24 a.m. and Annis tallied a blue marlin release 95 minutes later to give the Ashley Lauren the lead for good. The Honey Hush, winner of two previous KWLA events, held an early lead with a blue marlin released at 12:01 p.m. but the Ashley Lauren came from behind to get the win. Read more »
