  • Slow day at Big Rock

    The fourth day of fishing in the 58th annual Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament came and went Thursday without a major change to the leader board as 113-of-174 boats in the field elected to stay in port.

    A series of thunderstorms blew through the area and churned up the Big Rock fishing zone. Gusty winds generated choppy seas and blended offshore waters. This scattered billfish and made them hard to find. Competitors tallied just 10 releases -- three blue marlins, three white marlins and four sailfish -- as the tournament heads into its final two days. Read more »

  • Ashley Lauren maintains Big Rock lead

    When the first half of the 58th annual Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament came to a close Wednesday, competitors were either confident or concerned.

    Those in the “confident” category include all fishing teams that have already won money or are currently listed on the Big Rock leaderboard. The “concerned” group includes all competitors who have not yet staked a claim to the Big Rock’s record $1,914,100 purse. Read more »

    The Ashley Lauren – winner of the 19th annual Keli Wagner Lady Angler (KWLA) blue marlin tournament last Saturday – continued its hot streak Tuesday when the team arrived at the weigh station with a 621.4-pound blue marlin that grabbed the lead of the 58th annual Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament.     Pre-sale for a Big Rock Blue Marlin NC License Plate is now available! To apply for a Big Rock Specialty Plate you must complete the MVR-27PP-A form and return it to the Big Rock Office along with payment in the amount of $30.00. $20.00 of this fee will be retained by the Big Rock to support Charities and North Carolina DMV will retain $10.00. Personalized plates with a combination of up to 4 letter or numbers are available for an additional $30.00. All proceeds from personalized plates are retained by DMV.

  • Marlin Gull wins $433,500, grabs Big Rock lead

    Marlin Gull captain Kenny Midgett, Wanchese, and angler, William McSpadden, Coinjock, joined forces Monday to land a 564.8-pound blue marlin and win an instant prize of $433,500 as they grabbed the first-day lead in the 58th annual Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament.

    Three blue marlins were landed Monday as the tournament celebrated its biggest start in years. A flurry of offshore billfish activity helped fill up the tournament leaderboard as 105-of-174 boats battled for $1,914,100 on opening day. Read more »
