MOREHEAD CITY, Carteret County -

Another successful year at the 57th annual Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament raised $337,000, which was donated to charity.

The organization made the announcement in a press release. A total of 20 checks were written to local charities, high schools, and worthy organizations.

“The Big Rock tournament looks forward to this time of year when ‘Charity First’ takes center stage. Following another successful tournament, it is also personally gratifying to each board and staff member to see our hard work translate into meaningful contributions to worthwhile efforts”, said Tommy Bennett, charity chairman, in the press release.

Big Rock is the largest non-profit tournament of its kind in the United States giving at least $100,000 each year to deserving organizations. Each year in July the board president appoints a charity committee to carefully review all requests for funding. This year’s tournament committee consisted of Tommy Bennett, the chairman, along with Billy Kornegay, Ben Moore, Richard Crowe and Randy Ramsey.

A large majority of the money raised comes from sponsors. The tournament had 53 sponsors in 2015, from boat manufacturers, real estate and local businesses. Big Rock’s major sponsor, Calcutta, has led the way for the last three years.
