53rd Annual Charity Given

The success of the 2011 Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament, allows the board of directors to once again give back to area charities.
On Thursday, July 14, 2011, The Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament Board of Directors presented $74,500 to 13 worthy organizations from the 53rd Annual Big Rock Tournament. Combined with the record making $200,000 donation to the new Crystal Coast Hospice House, this year’s donation propelled the cumulative contributions since 1988 to $2,407,658.00!
Newport Developmental Center, a therapeutic day program for children with disabilities, and the Ronald McDonald House, were the beginning core charities for the Big Rock Tournament with contributions totaling just under $20,000. The unprecedented growth of the tournament has allowed the Big Rock Board of Directors to bestow five times that amount for the last 14 years.
“Part of our 5 point mission statement is to raise money for charity”, comments Charity Committee chairman, Casey Wagner. “As we look toward the future, the board is focused on making certain these core charities will continue to receive funding from Big Rock”, he continued.
The Big Rock Keli Wagner Lady Angler Tournament (KWLA), contributed to this outstanding total as well. This year the KWLA raised $18,500 from its one-day event for RAAB Cancer Clinic providing patient comfort and care. Additionally, Dr. Jeff Moore and his wife Kyra, KWLA tournament director, donated $13,000 from the sale of their prized Z-8 BMW which was auctioned online during tournament week. The KWLA tournament and events, sponsored by Alexseal Yacht Coatings, Tassel’s Fine Ladies Shoes and More, and BMW hosted 67 teams in 2011.
The growth in sponsorship and continued strong participation is credited for Big Rock’s giving success. “Though many tournaments have suffered more than a twenty-five percent loss of participation , Big Rock stayed strong”, explained Tournament Director, Crystal Hesmer. “Our Major Sponsor, Coble Trench Safety and other sponsors continue to offer their financial support year after year and we will continue to work hard to make the tournament worth the effort.
