The success of the 2010 Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament, allows the board of directors to once again give back to area charities.
On Wednesday, September 8, 2010, The Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament Board of Directors presented $56,000 to 13 worthy organizations. This year’s donation propelled the cumulative contributions since 1988 to $2,121,588.00.
Newport Developmental Center, a therapeutic day program for children with disabilities, and the Ronald McDonald House, were the beginning core charities for the Big Rock Tournament with contributions totaling just under $20,000. The unprecedented growth of the tournament has allowed the Big Rock Board of Directors to bestow five times that amount for the last 12 years.
“Part of our 5 point mission statement is to raise money for charity”, comments Charity Committee chairman, Casey Wagner. “As we look toward the future, the board is focused on making certain these core charities will continue to receive funding from Big Rock”, he continued.
The growth in sponsorship and continued strong participation is credited for Big Rock’s giving success. “Though many tournaments suffered more than a twenty-five percent loss of participation this year, Big Rock stayed strong”, explained Tournament Director, Crystal Watters. “Our Major Sponsor, Coble Trench Safety and other sponsors continue to offer their financial support year after year and we will continue to work hard to make the tournament worth the effort.
