Sensation maintains Big Rock lead

Gusty winds and lay-day forms were prominent Tuesday during the second day of the 55th Annual Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament as most of the 100 boats entered in the event elected to stay in port.

Anglers from 90 boats turned in lay day forms and just 10 boats ventured offshore. Winds reached 25 knots, whipping up 4-to-6 foot seas. Only one boat was able to catch and release a billfish as gamefish activity dominated the day. Read more »

Sensation(al) start for the 55th Big Rock

A late Monday hookup added extra drama to the start of the 55th annual Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament as Sensation angler Trey Siner of Concord, N.C. reeled in a 423.8-pounder to give his team the early lead.

Siner and Sensation captain Dale Britt, Morehead City, battled their fish for nearly two hours after it ran deep below the boat. Britt, who serves on the Big Rock Board of Directors, was initially worried the catch might not make weight. But those concerns were gone with the wind when his team jumped to the top spot on the tournament leader board. Read more »

Anglers head offshore to start 55th Big Rock

Sunny skies and light breezes encouraged 98 of the 100 boats entered in the 55th annual Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament to head offshore Monday morning and try to win a share of the $1,154,625 purse.

The Big Rock registration reached 100 boats late Sunday, a total that looked in jeopardy earlier that day. That was because Tropical Storm Andrea prevented several boats from reaching the area because of rough seas during the days leading up to the event. Read more »
